On what he described as a historic day for Victoria, John Brumby the Premier of Victoria announced that Victoria has commenced a joint trial involving the i-MiEV fully Electric car manufactured by Mitsubishi!
The trial will involve the delivery of the initial twenty Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric cars and later in the year another 70 Mitsubishi i-MiEV Electric Vehicles.
The exciting thing about this test is that these cars will not be sold to the Public.

According to Premier Brumby the trial with the Mitsubishi i-MiEV is part of an ambitious $38 billion Victorian Transport Plan and the goal of the plan is to find different ways to incorporate the Electric Car into the Victorian way of life. It is expected to be a 5 year plan but one week is a long time in politics and who knows what will happen in the next 5 years.

The Plan for the Mitsubishi i-MiEV Electric Car

How the Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicle will be allocated:

In the coming weeks the Department of Transport (a State Government Department), in conjunction with Victoria's motoring organization the Royal Auto Club of Victoria (RACV) will find 180 Victorian households who are interested in taking part in this new trial!

Mitsubishi i-MiEV has a roomy inside for a small car.
Mitsubishi i-MiEV has a cute little shift!

The households that are selected will be given the Mitsubishi i-MiEV for 3 months to use as their own vehicle. There will be around 180 charging points installed to keep these Mitsubishi i-MiEV cars charged.

There was no mentionĀ  of just where these charging points will be installed.
Mr Brumby is claiming that in many ways this will be the most comprehensive trial of electric vehicles of its kind anywhere in the world.

The Premier believes that electric vehicles have a large role to play in achieving a more sustainable state of Victoria and in a broader sense Worldwide!
I think this is a terrific initiative and I hope that it all goes well but (isn't there always a but) I do not believe in their present form that electric vehicles are the answer to our fuel problem.

I am still not convinced that the batteries being used in the electric vehicles are the right power supply for these vehicles. In my opinion they are too heavy, too costly and too hard to dispose of when they reach the end of their life cycle, which I have been told can be as short as 2 years.

I have not always been a big supporter of our current State Government but in the case of the trial with the Mitsubishi i-MiEV Electric Car I fully support this particular initiative of the Brumby government.

Smog and polution! We do need to do something about this, but what?

Good hub. Like you I think the idea of electric cars is intriguing but has problems such as batteries. Also, electricity doesn't come free. often fossil fuels are needed to create the electricity.

Thanks dahoglund for your kind comment. You are spot on with electricity! Our largest supplier of electricity, as we speak, is using Brown Coal but stay tuned there is more news to come on that front!

I suppose the first thing in the mind of most people is to stay away from oil. I think this is the first step towards this goal. And hopefully, improvements can be made greener on this electric prototype in future.

@good guy, yep I agree to stay away from oil. I'm not sure though how much of our electricity is generated this way?

I know most of ours is by Brown Coal.

Although this Mitsubishi i-miev car is a full production car it is my belief that the 'electric car' concept still has a long way to go before it can be considered in the same way as petrol fueled cars!

@marty Well I would really love to be considered for the test. There has been no further announcements so I will bring updates as they occur!

Well Victoria does it again. It seems whatever the latest thing going is, then the state of Victoria is onto it, true agvulpes?

Well done to Mr Brumby and Victoria for taking such an initiative. Certainly hope the electric car takes off but as you mention there are problems such as what to do with batteries - only two years life really?

Thanks for keeping us updated.

MPG thanks for dropping in:-)

Victoria under Mr Brumby certainly is a progressive state!

We have the above plan. We have just installed a North South water pipe line bringing water from the Northern Dams to the City Dams. Then we have the Water Desal Plant.

Now it has been raining solid for a week we will be awash with water lol

The list seems to be growing daily.

Regarding the battery life, I'm not suggesting that all batteries will need replacing at that length of time but consider how long your normal 'lead acid' battery lasts in your car. I am trying to find out how much the EV car batteries will cost as a replacement but the manufacturers are being very coy about disclosing the price!

I wonder why? My guess is that the cost is in the Thousands of Dollar range. Stay tuned!

An excellent hub agvulpes, I missed the news on this one somehow. Perhaps these electric cars will be useful in the inner city for councils too.

Did Premier Brumby offer how far they can travel or any other data?

Do you know why the Government chose the Mitsubishi i-MiEV Electric Vehicle for Australia?

earnestshub there was not real technical details given at the news conference, just a lot of poly speak about how good the Government is, after all it is an election year lol.

It seems to have been kept a secret how the Mitsubishi i-MiEV was selected but it is part of the $35 billion Transport plan the Premier Brumby has in motion.

Thanks for dropping in and joining the discussion!

I must read up on this Mitsubishi i-MiEV agvupes!

I hope they have a high voltage A.C motor and a 240 volt charge coupling.

Yes I am also doing some reading up on these Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric cars. From my research I have found that there are two ways of charging the Batteries in this electric Vehicle. One is a slow charge and the other is a Half hour charge. I believe the motor is 300volts but I'm still researching that one so don't quote me ok!
