How to keep your lap and laptop cooler!
Laptops and Notepads do generate heat, sometimes enough to do damage, it needs a laptop cooler to keep the heat away!
So you have just bought this brand new shiny laptop computer and she is a beauty ain't she?
In his haste to sell you the computer did the salesman mention that they just might happen to get a tad hot. Well trust me they do!
With the advances in technology there is also an increase in the amount of heat generated in a Laptop computer.
Are you aware that heat in your laptop can cause serious damage not necessarily immediately obvious but eventually it can lead to terminal failure in the laptop computer's motherboard and be a very expensive repair.

Cooling Pads for Laptops
Now you will always get some heat generated and the Laptop computer has been designed to handle this to a certain temperature.
During
the summer months when the ambient temperature starts to climb and your
laptop is getting a fair amount of use. eg downloading movies, playing
on-line games etc the inside temperature of your laptop will be
climbing as well. Most electronics are only designed to operate around
the 120f (50C) mark.
To overcome this problem the advent of the cooling pad has arrived.
There are a number of types of pads
- Cooler stands with fans, some with 2 fans others with 3 fans, some of these blow air onto the computer. Others suck the air away from the computer. The problem with these types of stands are: usually USB powered (duh, no such thing as a free lunch using the computer power produces more heat. Catch 22 ) More noise is generated and the stand is just another thing you need to carry around . Right ?
One other thing to add to the expense is that you may run out of USB ports and will need to purchase a Port Hub. - Cooler stands with outfans, these are more or less devices to just get some air circulating under you laptop and tilt it to a more user friendly angle. You still have something else to carry around with you!
- Cooler pads solid, just like a cushion filled with crystals and with ribs that absorb some of the heat generated by your laptop.
- Cooler pads roll-up, these pads use a special crystal substance which requires no refrigeration , they do not have fans so that the battery in your laptop or notebook will last longer between charges and there is no Fan noise. One big advantage of these roll up cooler pad for laptops and notepads is that they roll up and can be stowed away in your carry bag.
Reviews
Opinions seem divided on whether a roll up cooler pad is a viable option to a cooler pad fitted with cooling fans.
This is possibly due to the fact that most users have already done the damage to their motherboards before they start using a cooler pad or a device of any description.
My suggestion then is this: If the ambient temperature where you are going to use your lap top is going to be high, like in a car in the middle of Summer then when you buy your laptop or notepad spend the extra $20-30 and buy yourself a laptop cooler pad of some description!

To repair or to buy a new Laptop
Just to emphasize the point a friend of mine had a laptop computer and was told that the problem with his computer was caused by overheating.
Due to the high cost of repairing his old laptop he finished up buying a new computer and I advised him to buy a cooling pad at the same time as he bought the computer. It is better to be safe than sorry!
After doing some research with my computer Guru's here in Australia the name ASUS came out high on the list. From what I learned they were making the motherboards for a lot of other brand names and decided that they could make the own computer. I would love to get some feed back on anyone that has an ASUS laptop computer.

An Alternative to a Laptop Cooler
I like the look of this unit that is very versatile and would save users having their Laptops sitting on their laps and would also allow good air flow around the laptop.

oliversmum, thanks for visiting my hub on how to run your laptop cooler. As I suggested most time the salesman usually just mentions the top ticket item , "oh and will you have extended warranty with that madam?" How many times have you heard that when buying products?
Oliversmum. With your season heading into winter now you probably be OK until next summer but if I were you I would definitely put it in my budget to buy a cooler.

Most laptops nowadays have "heat pipes" built-in to siphon heat from the innards to the side vents. Thus, having pads and fans UNDER the computer is absolutely USELESS and a waste of money. Most fans also require juice, usually drawn from the laptop itself through a USB port. Thus, it will SHORTEN the battery life of a laptop, while producing no noticeable effect.
Study your exact laptop's vent layout and heat spots before you buy one. You most likely do NOT need one.

kschang, thanks for your comment and you do raise some good points. You do say most laptops have heat pipes, I just wonder how many would have these built in and also how many salespeople would know which particular models have these 'pipes'.
Thanks for the comment about the battery. I am not too sure that it would actually shorten the 'life' of the battery but it certainly would mean that the battery would requiring charging more often.

I feel that you may like to bookmark this Hub because it is a contentious subject and there will be many people prepared to debunk these coolers as 'gimmicks':-)
But I am still of the opinion that many laptop problems come from overheating and anything that can help your laptop run cooler will be of benefit to you and your pocket :-)
My laptop is about 3 years old and it gets very hot. I think I will get one of those babies :)

I don't understand why my air vent is on the bottom of a laptop. I'm temporarily getting around not having a cooling pad by putting it up on a book occasionally and letting the air circulate.

This is timely for me agvulpes. I need a better laptop cooler! When I use my laptop in bed the cooler I have is useless.
If I play something CPU hungry like "Farmville" my laptop is too hot inside an hour! I am going to look through the ones you have listed to see if I can find a better laptop cooler than the one I have.

One of our readers may be able to offer some help and I would be happy to do some research on your behalf. I'm sure you will not be the only person using the same type of Laptop.

earnestshub, there may come a time that users may need more than one type of laptop cooler! a cooler for the couch potato and a laptop cooler for bed!
earnestshub what I should have pointed out to viewers was one of the main reasons laptops get hot is the amount of CPU use that laptops use when running applications?

agvulpes, I reckon Farmville was designed by someone with an interest in selling CPU's.
My CPU usage (new Toshiba system win7 and 4g ram) jumps from 3 to 11% up to 60 even 70% of my CPU when I am farming!
So many people play Farmville and similar games I reckon most people with a laptop need a cooler.
Laptop cooler's are great. Motherboard make use of CMOS technology,and semiconductor devices. They easily catch heat and starts making knuckle voice. In summer ambient temperature is also very high, that time those cooling pad really make difference and long live of your laptop.
earnestshub thanks for the clarification. To me anything with a CPU usage heading over 70% is going to create heat and will definitely be in need of a laptop cooler before they run into trouble.

Unfortunately I have found that most salespersons are not educated well enough by the manufacturer and possibly are not even aware that this may be a problem. Worse still they do know about it and want you to burn out your computer quicker than it should and sell you another more you-beaut one.

Seeing that you have just bought your new netbook my suggestion is that you should buy your laptop cooler sooner rather than later. Having been in the electronic industry for over 50 years I have seen the effects of heat. Sometimes it is a gradual wearing down of components that is not visible to the naked eye and takes a period of time to have what can be a devastating effect.
So please for the sake of about $30 for a netbook cooler, to save what could turn into a hefty repair bill down the road. It is a wise investment!

Hi, Thanks for the information, My laptop is so noisy when the fans starts and the heat is sometimes unbearable. I have invested into a Belkin cooling stand which seems to work. Thanks for a well written Hub

Seriously though it is great to hear that your have invested in the Belkin cooling stand although I wonder if you are just not shifting the problem now to the battery? (if the belkin cooling stand has a fan)
I am still feeling that perhaps something like the ThermaPAK Laptop Cooler Pad is a better proposition?

BB, see that is the problem , there is no such thing as a 'free lunch'. Creating heat requires energy. In this case where does that energy come from? Correct! the laptop battery. When the laptop manufacturer designed your laptop my bet is that the design specs on the battery did not include running the fans of a Cooling pad ?
On the other hand if the laptop cooler ran via the way of a household power point that would be a whole new scenario, also defeating the purpose of portability!

Do you know what surprises me the most? Until I read your hub, a laptop cooler was unknown to me.
Why is it that salespeople often do not know what accessories your tech poducts may or may not need? I would think that tech people, especially, would want to upsell and offer you more additional products to buy.
drbj, I must confess to much the same thing. I had seen laptop coolers around but thought that they were just a gimmick!
However the more I delved into the subject of laptop cooling the more I realized that maybe they are a necessary evil!
Great Hub! I actually hate using my laptop because of the heating problem. Luckily my Dell desktop just keeps on running and I don't use the laptop often. I'll try some of you suggestions. Good Work!

I bought a new Toshiba a few months ago, for christmas I was given a USB cooler. My last computer where the fan became so noisy, was a lesson well learnt. Thanks for this hub, it will prevent any future problems.
G'day Hawksdream. In my opinion you can't go far wrong buying the Toshiba and coupled with a Laptop cooler it should give you years of reliable service. As a matter of fact I am typing this very comment on a Toshiba laptop and it is barely warm after being turned on for about 14 hours:-)

Thanks for the info. My laptop is lightly used and I’m not aware of any over heating. I’m mostly just word processing. When I travel I do get the hot leg syndrome so I’ve been using a self-inflating laptop desk /pad. The ones with fans are great but I’m not gonna drag one around with me. @lawman, it's a good idea, especially for younger men to keep the heat of a laptop away from their groin area!

I have a Toshiba its around 3 years old generally runs at around 100 degrees centigrade you have a point but air flow is a large part of it, if I have good flow then I can knock the temp down by 20 degrees sometimes. Companies design these things to fry otherwise we wouldn't need a new one don't blame the guy in the shop.

agvulpes. Hi. I find this information invaluable, On how to run your Laptop Cooler.
When purchasing my Laptop, it was not mentioned, that the computer could overheat and may cause big problems.
My Laptop is only a few months old, so hopefully when I buy one these cooling systems, it will put my mind at ease regarding this problem.
