Hybrid Tea Roses - My favorites are Just Joey, Double Delight, The Childrens Rose

There are many different types of roses available today, eg you can get David Austin Roses, Modern English Roses but the Hybrid Tea Rose is at the moment arguably the most popular flower in the world.
A lot of people although lovers of Roses do not realize that most of the Roses on sale today are actually Hybrid Tea Roses also sometimes referred to as the Modern Rose.
Three of my favorite Hybrid Tea Roses are:
- Just Joey
- Double Delight
- The Childrens Rose
Each of these Rose has a description following.
Just Joey
Just Joey ,depending on my mood, would be my favorite Rose. Simply for it's boldness in display the name does not do justice to this beauty of the Rose kingdom. Coming to life around 1972 in the UK with the parents being 'Fragrant Cloud' (itself being a beautiful rose) and 'Dr A. Verhage'.
'Just Joey' has won awards such as the James Mason Gold Medal in 1986 and the Worlds Favorite Rose in 1994. So you see I am in good company.
The Rose bush in itself can be quite expansive and fortunately likes a good cut back when not in flower. It's leaves are dark green and the big double flowers are a copper/apricot blend tending to a golden color and grow in gorgeous clusters, very appealing to the viewer.
The flowers on the Just Joey are reasonably long lasting and are great for simply garden viewing or for cutting and displaying in a vase.
The Just Joey is not a heavily scented flower.
It has been said by many that 'Just Joey' Rose bushes stand alone in comparison to other Roses and I agree completely.
Being a strong growing Rose bush which will stand a fair amount of neglect I strongly recommend the Just Joey for any home gardener.
Double Delight
Double Delight would be my favorite rose for scent. With a unique scent that is hard to describe, to me there is a combination of spice, fruit, mild lemon/lime. As I said it is hard to describe but as 'they' say it is to die for!
Once you smell these roses you will want one or maybe more!
Not only do these Double Delights smell good they are spectacular in appearance.
The name is very appropriate, for as the rose blooms the blossom is almost white and as it matures a cherry red tinge starts to appear around the edges of the petals and progresses towards the centre of the petals.
I have noticed that these Double Delights to be seen in their full glory need plenty of sunlight.
Released in 1977 the Double Delight has the parentage of 'Granada' and 'Garden Party'

Childrens Rose
The Children's Rose also has a beautiful full appearance and an alluring scent.
Let's not get confused, from my research there appears to be Two Children's Roses both released by the same breeders called Meilland Roses from France.
One is named Gina Lollabrigida released in 1990 with funds going to the Children's Hospital in Britain. The 'Gina Lollabrigida is a yellow blooming Rose.
However the 'Children's Rose' I am referring to is also known as 'Fredric Mistral' and is also bred by Meilland Roses in France in 1996.
The 'Fredric Mistral' blooms are doubles and hold their shape very well, with a light pink to mauve shade with light green foliage. The blooms have a very fruity scent but not overpowering like some other varieties. You can understand why when you look at the parentage of 'Perfume Delight' and 'Meizeli'.
This Rose has won awards for it's fragrance including Belfast Fragrance Award in 1996.

I don't particularly like roses - I prefer wilder looking flowers - but I have to admit that some specimens quite take the breath away.

hmmm now how can you say that roses are not wild, if you are not careful they 'bite' and 'scratch' and I have the scars to prove it :-)

@GusTheRedneck, mate because of the various blooming times my favorites change virtually from day to day. We have had as many as 400 roses in our garden but a few years back we suffered from a prolonged drought and found new homes for many of our babies lol. We have keep our favorites and now have a much more manageable amount of roses.

As many poets and writers have compared Roses to Women, let me say that some women can be perceived as 'too' beautiful and they are studied to try and find an imperfection! Using the same analogy you could say that some Roses could also be 'too' beautiful.
However having studied Roses over many years I find that every blooming seems to produce something just a little bit different. This is something to look forward to!

My personal choice is the Fredrick Mistral Children's Rose,although I do love them all.

darski, I'm so glad that I could brighten your day. I will certainly be adding to my display of Hybrid Tea Roses on Hub Pages. I have never tried Rose Tea but I believe that it is very good for you. Some people add rose petals to salads to enhance the flavor.

That's quite right... but my favorite is black rose which I tried to bloom but failed! Nice article on roses... I loved it! Thanks for sharing. - Andy
G'day andycool thanks for sharing your story. It's a pity you did not succeed with your quest for the 'black' rose, although it does not surprise me! Many have tried to perfect the Black Hybrid Tea Rose but as yet no one has been up to the task. Maybe I should try because if done correctly it would make that person very rich indeed and gain for them a place in History.
According to my 'sources' so called black hybrid tea roses that are available today are in fact a 'deep red'. True 'black' hybrid tea roses are not as yet commercially available. Thanks andycool for dropping by!

Wow! These are all so beautiful! I too love roses.
I used to have several of them in my garden. However, they all died when they were covered with flood waters about 2 years ago. Since then, I have not been able to replace them.

joat thanks for your lovely comment:-) We lost a lot of our Roses for the opposite reason : we had a 10 year drought and decided that we could not afford the water to keep our 400 odd roses going, even though hybrid tea roses are very hardy.
We gave a lot of our roses to good adoptive homes and through natural attrition we only have about 50 or so left.
I would feel very lonely if I did not have at least one Rose, I would pick Just Joey, to wake up to in the morning!

Stunningly beautiful roses! They are my favorite flower and your photos show why. One of my mom's roses was the double delight and it's scent was heavenly. I miss her roses as much as I miss her. Your hub gave me many sweet memories of both. :)
